How to Correctly Pose and Answer Data Mining Questions?
Kurt Driessens, PhD, Assistant Professor, Department of Data Science and Knowledge Engineering Maastricht University, Maastricht, the Netherlands
Jerry Spanakis, PhD, Assistant Professor, Department of Data Science and Knowledge Engineering, Maastricht University, Maastricht, the Netherlands
Using examples drawn from healthcare, we introduce a number of different types of questions that can be answered or, in some cases, are more difficult to answer through data mining and machine learning techniques. We will show how to collect, select and prepare quality data suited for answering these questions. A number of different learning settings, e.g. supervised vs unsupervised learning, will be explained together with a number of learning approaches. We discuss the role that deep learning is taking in machine learning research. We also show how to evaluate the produced models and make sure the results are trustworthy.
